Symbols carry weight. They communicate allegiance, identity, and intention. Among the most misappropriated symbols today is the rainbow—a sign originally given by God as a token of His covenant, a visible reminder of His mercy, His justice, and His promise to humanity. God said to Noah, “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.” (Genesis 9:13–15 KJV).
Yet in contemporary culture, this sacred symbol has been repurposed. Rainbow-themed parades, apparel, accessories, and merchandise celebrate Pride, elevating human desire, self-expression, and rebellion above God. From bracelets to clothing collections, from earrings to banners, the rainbow is no longer a covenantal reminder—it has become a marketed statement of self-exaltation. The veil over the rainbow obscures its divine meaning, hiding its original purpose of mercy and covenant beneath layers of cultural reinterpretation.
Scripture repeatedly warns of the danger of pride, the root of rebellion against God. The fall of Satan exemplifies this peril. Isaiah writes, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:12–15 KJV). Pride, the desire to elevate self above God, was the cause of his destruction, and it is the same spiritual posture celebrated when human culture elevates self over divine authority.
Pride culture today celebrates behaviors Scripture identifies as sinful. Homosexuality, transgender behavior, and sexual immorality are condemned in Leviticus: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22 KJV) and reinforced in Deuteronomy: “There shall be no whoredom, nor sodomy, nor any corruption among you.” (Deuteronomy 23:17–18 KJV). While Christians are called to love individuals, God’s Word clearly delineates which behaviors violate His design.
The Apostle Peter warns of the consequences for those who elevate themselves above God: “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17 KJV). Pride celebrations, rainbow-themed merchandise, and the normalization of rebellion against God’s design are not merely cultural—they are a spiritual inversion of His covenant.
James exhorts believers to humility and alignment with God’s authority: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” (James 4:10 KJV). When symbols like the rainbow are marketed and adorned as statements of human desire or rebellion, they veil sacred truth. John reminds us, “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3:4 KJV). Pride is sin; misappropriating God’s covenant in merchandise or public celebrations symbolizes spiritual veiling, a rejection of divine order.
For Christians, this has practical implications. Symbols communicate allegiance. Fashion, adornment, and color can be neutral, but when colors like the rainbow are elevated to celebrate self-exaltation, they become declarations of rebellion against God. The rainbow was given to signify His covenant, His mercy, and His promise. Misappropriation of it—through Pride merchandise, parades, and cultural exaltation of self—veils its meaning, inverts its purpose, and calls believers to discernment.
In a world eager to redefine symbols, veil sacred truth, and celebrate self above God, Christians are called to vigilance. God’s covenant cannot be co-opted. His rainbow remains a reminder of His authority, mercy, and promise—an emblem that must never be obscured by human desire, rebellion, or pride.
